November 2013 Policy Study, Number 13-7

America Needs America's Energy

America's Energy Independence

America’s energy future is in our hands. We can no longer wait for the government to rally us. History has shown this will not happen.

President Carter stated in 1979, “And I’m asking you for your good and for your nation’s security to take no unnecessary trips, to use carpools or public transportation whenever you can, to park your car one extra day per week, to obey the speed limit, and to set your thermostats to save fuel. Every act of energy conservation like this is more than just common sense — I tell you it is an act of patriotism.”

Thirty years after President Carter gave his remarks, the big unknowns are the same: Where is the price of gasoline headed, and what will be the future of energy in America? While President Carter’s prescription of conserving energy should have been important all along, energy conservation alone is not the total answer to our national energy security.

Energy security is based on an energy plan in which we all conserve – but also determine how we will obtain more oil and gas, or wind power, or solar power, or any of the other alternative sources now becoming available – to meet the demand.

Energy security ensures we have the reliable energy sources to meet our needs that are available within our own country. The energy dependence we suffer today costs us economically in the form of high prices and lost jobs.
