Iowa Suffers Due to Lack of Vision from Governor
Mt. Pleasant, IA – The state of Iowa is suffering due to a lack of vision from Governor Tom Vilsack. That’s the conclusion of a Public Interest Institute BRIEF. PII Research analyst Steven Garrison says the Governor’s lack of vision on budgetary issues has worsened the fiscal crisis facing the state. Garrison says Governor Vilsack refused to see the current budget crisis, and instead wanted to push the current budget concerns into the next fiscal year. Garrison cites Governor Vilsack’s proposal to fill a projected $120 million deficit this fiscal year by raiding the Economic Emergency Fund. Garrison says this would only leave the state with $50 million in that fund, with the state facing a $300 million deficit next fiscal year. Garrison says the Governor’s desire to spend nearly all of the state’s cash reserve in a single year, while leaving larger budget deficits in the following years shows his lack of vision. In conclusion, Garrison says the Governor has repeatedly shown an inability to see future problems, instead focusing on the here and now.
