Mt. Pleasant, IA – The average Iowa state employee makes nearly $13,000 more a year than the average private sector employee. That’s the findings in a Public Interest Institute BRIEF. PII research analyst Steven Garrison uses U.S. Department of Labor statistics to compare state employee and private sector employee salaries. The average annual income for a state of Iowa employee is $40,316, compared to an average annual income of $27,500 for private sector employees. Garrison uses these figures to simply compare the pay gap between private and public sector employee salaries and where Iowa compares to other states. Iowa has the tenth highest average pay for state government workers. Garrison says during this time of tight state government budgets and revenue shortfalls, now would be a good time to take a much closer look at how the State of Iowa pays for salaries.
