Iowa’s Privileged Class – State University Employees

Mt. Pleasant, IA – In a May 2002 INSTITUTE BRIEF, Public Interest Institute Research Analyst Steven Garrison examined the pay differences between Iowa State Government Employees and private sector employees.    This month Garrison examines the pay difference between State Public University Employees and private university employees.

Garrison says U.S. Department of Labor statistics show that in 2000 the average annual salary of a State Public University Employee was 168% of the average salary of their public university counterparts.   Garrison says Iowa Public University Employees were paid 33% above the national average.

Garrison says even during a time of budget shortfalls in Iowa, the faculty at these universities will not even consider holding there rapidly increasing salaries even with last year, let alone consider taking a pay cut.   Garrison says these faculty members have instead suggest cutting K-12 education funding instead.

While looking at the ever increasing salaries of Public University Employees, Iowans should look at how those salaries are funded.    Garrison says Iowans should be given an honest picture of what their “education” tax dollars are really being spent on, so they can determine is cuts are necessary.
