Charter Schools In
Iowa
Mt. Pleasant, IA – Public Interest Institute
Research Analyst Amy Frantz examines the issue of charter schools in Iowa in a
June INSTITUTE BRIEF. Frantz discusses the Iowa state law which creates the
pilot charter-school program in the state.
Frantz says in general, charter
schools have the flexibility to be more innovative than traditional public
schools. She says charter schools can experiment more easily with longer
school days or years, smaller class size, or private partnerships.
Frantz says one benefit of charter
schools, which is often lacking in public schools, is accountability. Charter
schools must meet established academic standards, and if they don’t their
charter can be revoked and the school closed.
In conclusion, Frantz asks, what
will be the result of Iowa’s limited charter-school pilot program? She says
only time will tell if the experiment is successful.
