NEW STATE RANKING FOR
ECONOMC FREEDOM RELEASED Mt. Pleasant, IA -- A new study ranking all 50 U.S. states and the 10 Canadian provinces based on the degree of economic freedom will be released today by the National Center for Policy Analysis (NCPA) and Canada’s Fraser Institute. Iowa will rank 33rd in that study. Public Interest Institute Research Analyst David Hogberg is available to discuss this study, why Iowa ranks where it does and what we can do to improve. The NCPA/Fraser Institute study ranks the states based on their overall “economic freedom,” which includes such factors as the size of the tax burden, the size of government and the flexibility of the state’s labor market. This index is important because changes in prosperity tend to reflect changes in economic freedom. While economic freedom is not the sole determinant of a state’s wealth, the correlation is strong. WHO: David Hogberg – PII Research Analyst WHAT: State Rankings of Economic Freedom WHEN: TUESDAY, DECEMBER 10 CONTACT NUMBER: (319) 385-3462 This index is the heir to the Economic Freedom of the World, an annual report produced by Fraser and the Cato Institute, which is reviewed annually at meetings that began over a decade ago and have included such economists as Milton Friedman and the NCPA’s Gerald Scully. The state index of economic freedom uses the same methodology. The complete study is available on the NCPA web site at: www.ncpa.org. # # # #
